Nav Bar Development SME Server on Centos Base

Welcome to the SME Server on Centos Project Wiki. This space provides a central location, or information repository, for the effort to migrate SME Server 6.0.1 to a Centros 3.1 Package Base. Located herein; you'll find all current packages to upgrade SME 6.0.1 to a Centos core, as well as the most current information on the status of the migration process.

This is a community effort, spearheaded by no one in particular, so jump in where ever you feel comfortable and contribute.

Before you continue, please be forewarned that the packages and information that follow are by no means even close to production quality. Proceed at your own risk!!! This is a pre-alpha project. With that said, let’s roll up our sleeves and do some dev!

What Is Centos and Why Are We Looking At It?

Centos is a GPL project to rebuilt RedHat Enterprise Linux source code into a distribution freely availiable under the conditions of the GPL. Read more here: http://www.centos.org

The SME Server community is looking as this distribution as it is a natural match for the SME Server.

How Can I Get Involved?

Very easily. We alway like people eager to help. Here's a mini "Get Involved Howto":

  1. Join the devinfo mailing list located here: HomePage.html?Mailing%20Lists . This is the best place to communicate with other developers working on this effort. Please be aware that traffic on this list varies dramatically from day to day. In general, it's a pretty low volume list. Don't be shy on posting, but please keep posts development related only (i.e., no tech. support questions).
  2. Round up some type of a test machine for installing the SME Server on Centros software. The best solution is a version of VMWare, but an old Pentium II (or higher) PC will work just fine.
  3. Run through the Migration HowTo.
  4. Visit the Known Issues and ToDo List.
  5. Dive in and start fixing things.

Known Issues / Bugs

Being a pre-alpha effort, SME Server on Centos 3.1 has issues. At some point, we may open a project in the bug tracker to track development progress, etc. Until then, you can find out the lastest by visiting SMEonCentos Known Issues.

To Do List

For those with a desire to help in this effort, visit SMEonCentos ToDo List. This is a really good place to start in the development process.
