With Netware 4.1, SMP is an OEM product. This is mainly due to the .LAN and .DSK drivers being written in assembler and not C. Also, those drivers weren't written to scale on multiple processors. Also, the layer that describes the hardware (PSM.NLM) is compiled by the vendors to their specific hardware. GreenRiver, however, changes all this by including a general Intel PSL.NLM that works with MPC compliant hardware. The .LAN and .DSK drivers are rewritten in C and work the the SMP version of CLIB. I've seen and "touched" GreenRiver running an a 4 processor HP here and all I can say is that it is pretty slick. The most impressive feature of GreenRiver next to SMP is the automatic abend recovery. Yep, you read it right. No more dead servers due to page faults! GreenRiver will trap and put to "sleep" the offending NLM and resume processing. No one will know there was an abend except for the trap messages displayed on the console. The server also copies the trap info to a log file on the C: drive and then migrate it to a log file on sys:. For you skeptics, this was demoed LIVE. But, if the offending NLM is part of the system, well, then you out of luck. Insider info, look for the beta of the DOS and Windows 32bit client to be released at the end of the month. The weather is great in Utah, and the forecast is calling for rain Saturday, but who cares, we will all be gone by then. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 1996 01:08:07 GMT+0001 From: "Szekeres Bela, Jr." Subject: Re: Abends and Green River >I notice from the session abstracts for Brainshare Europe that there >are sessions on how to take the server down after an abend and still >allow people to save their files. Any comments anyone (yes I am >trying to raise the money to get to Nice :-) > >Garry Scobie After Abend: 1. Get into the debugger (Ctrl+Alt+R Shft+L Shft). 2. type: eip=CSleepUntilInterrupt 3. type: g This will put the active process (which abended) into sleep until it gets an interrupt. Hopefully, it will not, until you can down the server (or at least dismount all volumes). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 1996 13:09:48 -0600 From: Joe Doupnik Subject: NW 4.x tape backups I thought the group might be pleased to know that in the next release of NW 4, code name Green River no assigned number, it will be possible, realistic, and easy to restore a server, volume, NDS, parts of NDS tree, whole NDS tree from tape. It uses a new TSA410.NLM and TSANDS.NLM to do the work. This will be a clean safe live-in-real-time without loss backup (no file closing) and restore method. This is a very fine piece of work by the SMS group of Novell and was presented this week at Brainshare. The specs were still loose enough for them to make an addition yesterday at my request. GR is expected to ship at the end of the summer (+/-). No, this material will not run on NW4.10 and predecessors. The really impressive part was Brainshare, with thousands of accounts and hundreds of workstations, all running win95 and NAM to deliver groupwise, etc. VERY impressive, and it was flawless! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jul 1996 06:51:36 -0700 From: Randy Grein To: "NetWare 4 list" Subject: Green River, was Re: Tape Backup Systems >Is there a document somewhere detailing the enhancements/fixes planned >for Green River? Green River Release Further Simplifies Network Management Tasks, Reducing Time and Effort OREM, Utah - June 25, 1996 - Novell, Inc. today announced strong positive customer response to Novell Directory Services (NDS) enhancements in the next release of the NetWare* 4 operating system, code-named Green River. Green River includes a new NDS tool, NDS Manager, that lets network administrators monitor and manage the replication and partitioning of multiple NDS trees through an easy-to-use graphical utility, making management of enterprise networks simple and efficient. NDS Manager provides administrators with improved control of user objects stored in the directory and network resources and more efficient network management. Other Green River NDS enhancements include a User Template Object, which allows administrators to set defaults for new user objects and to make changes to multiple NDS objects simultaneously, and the ability to view and manage audit logs through NDS. Together, these features help make Green River a powerful network, intranet and Internet solutions platform that will adapt and grow with a company's business, providing an enduring competitive edge. "With NDS enhancements such as NDS Manager, Green River is a logical update path for our NDS infrastructure servers," said Michael Lewis, senior engineer, networks at Chevron. "Nothing else offers us the security, flexibility and ease-of-management we need to maintain secure directory trees." "NDS Manager makes my job as network administrator much faster and simpler," said Dan Blevins, technical analyst, Microsystems and LANs at Hallmark Card. "The Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows me to make changes to the company's directory tree on the fly, including replications and partitions to the directory. NDS is the only directory that offers the extensibility and scalability I need to manage a complex directory efficiently and cost-effectively." About NDS With over 15 million users, Novell's directory service is the most robust global directory service available today. NDS is hierarchical, object-oriented and extensible, providing unique identification of, and location-independent user access to, any network resource, such as applications, printers and other networked devices. Users and objects can be organized into logical "tree" structures that can be managed and accessed from anywhere on the network. NDS is the only directory service on the market that meets users' requirements for a secure network environment through rules-based security administration. Novell further reduces customers' cost of ownership by leveraging NDS throughout its network solutions. GroupWise 5, the upcoming release of Novell's expanded client/server email system with full document management capabilities, uses NDS to unify messaging with network access and administration. ManageWise 2.1, announced this week (see corresponding press release "Novell ManageWise Delivers Cross-Platform Management Services"), utilizes NDS-based network information to provide a comprehensive PC LAN management system. In addition, NDS provides developers with a powerful framework for creating distributed client/network applications that leverage NDS for network management and user access to network resources. "The directory service we provide with NetWare 4 is the industry's leading global directory service, and the enhancements in Green River continue to improve on what is already clearly recognized as the most flexible, secure and easy-to-use directory available today," said William Donahoo, senior director of product marketing at Novell. "New features such as NDS Manager allow network administrators to better manage their growing networks through NDS." NDS Manager NDS Manager replaces the DOS-based Partition Manager tool available in NetWare 4.1 with a hierarchical graphical tool that allows administrators to make changes to directory trees, including updating NDS itself, without taking down the server. NDS Manager also allows administrators to: Automatically detect and update out-of-date versions of NDS on servers; *Incorporate and manage multiple trees through partitioning and replication services for the directory database; *Make repairs to the directory easily from client workstations anywhere on the network; and *Run as an integrated part of the NWAdmin utility. About Green River Green River, the next version of Novell's market-leading NetWare network operating system, provides the network platform for comprehensive network, intranet and Internet solutions. This platform significantly eases installation, migration and administration of networking processes. Currently slated for release later this year, other major features of Green River include: *Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) scalability to support network applications and intranets; *Integrated TCP/IP and DHCP support to simplify network management and ease user access to both corporate intranet and Internet resources; *C2-level security to protect sensitive data during transmission across networks; *Advanced network printing capabilities to give users more control over their printing; *NetWare Application Launcher (NAL) to centrally administer network applications and provide location-independent network access; and *Easier network migration planning and installation functionality. AND Slated for fall release, next NetWare release expands access to corporate network, intranet and Internet-based information OREM, Utah * June 18, 1996 * Novell, Inc. today announced it shipped beta software for the next release of the NetWare* 4 network operating system, code-named Green River, to over 2,800 development and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners. Green River will improve users' access to information and resources throughout networks, intranets and the Internet, while reducing the overall costs of owning and maintaining those networks. Based on positive beta customer response regarding the reliability of the Green River software currently in testing, Novell has expanded its beta program to include developers and OEMs, giving them time to optimize their products and solutions for the launch of Green River this fall. By first customer ship, Novell anticipates thousands of third-party partner products will run with Green River. With over 55 million users, NetWare continues to be the world's best-selling network software. Novell worked with its installed base to identify the network server features they required; based on that feedback, the company designed Green River as a powerful solutions platform that requires less network administration than other network operating systems. Major enhancements to the next version of NetWare include: *Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) scalability to support network applications and intranets; *Integrated TCP/IP support to simplify network management and ease user access to both corporate intranet and Internet resources; *C2-level security to protect sensitive data during transmission across networks; *Advanced network printing capabilities to give users more control over their printing; *Easier network migration and installation functionality; and *New graphical administration tools to better manage companies' network and Novell Directory Services* (NDS*) environments. Developers can now incorporate these services into their own applications, enabling their customers to create and use networks that can adapt to their business processes and provide them with an enduring competitive advantage. We're extending the industry's leading network operating system to become an integrated solutions platform by adding new services,* said William Donahoo, senior director of product marketing for Novell. *Using these new services in Green River, companies will find they can extend their existing corporate networks to intranets and the Internet, streamline their network installation and administration processes, and significantly cut their overall cost of ownership in the process.* Scalable, Secure Platform for Intranet and Internet Applications Companies can install Green River and leverage SMP with NDS, C2-grade network security and NetWare/IP* 2.2 with dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) support to safely run and access critical applications such as Oracle and Sybase databases, leading messaging systems including Novell GroupWise*, search engines and other network applications across corporate networks, intranets and the Internet. C2 network security will also enable NetWare to serve as a platform for electronic commerce. In addition, full TCP/IP support gives users the freedom to choose IPX/SPX or TCP/IP protocols to run their networks and benefit from direct intranet and Internet connections. Installation, Migration and Administration Made Easier The Green River release of NetWare simplifies NOS installations and upgrades from previous NetWare versions. New hardware auto-detection identifies network cards in a server and automatically installs the correct LAN drivers to speed NetWare installation. Two new utilities also help administrators upgrade NetWare 2 or NetWare 3 servers by automatically migrating modeled bindery information to existing NetWare 4 trees. To further simplify overall network user and resource administration, Green River also features new NDS Manager and NetWare Administrator (NWAdmin*) tools. NDS Manager* provides a new GUI NDS utility that lets network managers see and administer multiple directory trees simultaneously, and NWAdmin enables global changes to multiple user, resource and data objects in the directory to further expedite administration processes. End Users Realize Benefits Novell Distributed Print Services (NDPS) functionality will give network users and administrators access to, and better control over, all network printing resources, letting users check the status of their network printing. The NetWare Application Launcher* (NAL) also gives users more control over their network environments by providing consistent access to their network applications and resources, enabling complete location-independent networking. NAL works with Novell 32-bit client software for Windows, Windows 95 and Windows NT environments. Also, Novell is including in Green River desktop client support for all major operating systems, including DOS, Macintosh, OS/2, Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT and UNIX. Green River Delivers on Net2000 Green River supports Novell's Net2000 developer initiative to enhance and ease the development and deployment of new network-aware applications and components. With Net2000 application programming interfaces (APIs), developers can create network applications and components easily using popular development environments and tools. The networking services in Green River provide developers with a robust networking infrastructure for distributing objects across global networks, introducing a reliable foundation for distributed network, intranet and Internet applications,* said Gary Mueller, vice president and general manager of Novell's Developers Services Division. *The DeveloperNet* Update, Novell SDK CD-ROM, Release Eight gives developers full Basic and Visual Basic scripting capabilities to create networked applications that can leverage computing logic across those networks. Green River incorporates Net2000 features including remote and source-level debugging facilities to give developers easier ways to trap NLM errors written in C or C++, enhance and fine-tune operations, and provide more reliable components. *We are very excited about integrating our WAN adapters with Green River,* said Igor Krichevsky, business unit manager at Eicon Technology. *Its IP functionality and scalability make it an excellent platform for intranet and Internet connectivity, while its source-level debugging facilities allow us to bring our solutions to market that much sooner.* The NetBasic Network and Management Extensions (NMX) engine in Green River allows NLMs and components to share a common interface to expose their services and functionality. *The Green River release represents Novell's attention to the developer. Both client and server programming of NetWare applications will be much easier,* said Gary Dowdy, president of Apiary, Inc. *On the client side, developers want ActiveX Controls for Visual Basic, Delphi and C scripting languages; Green River delivers these tools.* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Aug 1996 21:25:32 -0500 From: Darwin Collins To: netw4-l@bgu.edu Subject: Re: Green River Open Beta vs. Beta 6.0 Not much to report. Have not done any disaster recoveries so can't judge if the new DSBACKER is doing its job. No problems with the newer NWADMIN. Actually, with it increased functionality, I am enjoying it. It appears to co-exist with 4.10 satisfactory. New NDSMGR had some problems. It would bomb when handling Netware 3.11 server objects, when those servers were not available. Don't have multi-processor, can't evaluate that. There are user templates that you can create. They are now created as a class 'User Template', so folks can not login with them. I have not had any problems with existing NDS utilities working with 4.11. ------------------------------
