Short: Workbench backdrop picture in fast RAM Author: t.jager@gmx.de (Torsten Jager) Uploader: t jager gmx de (Torsten Jager) Type: util/wb Version: 1.01 Architecture: m68k-amigaos Kurz: Workbench Hintergrundbild im Fast-RAM Date: 20-dec-2004 (deutsche Beschreibung siehe unten - german description see below) $VER: wallpaper 1.01 (20.12.2004) --- english section ---------------------------------------- Purpose ======= Yes, yes, I know that workbench already can display background graphics ;^) But things like photos need many colors, and they thus take away lots of precious graphics memory. On the other hand, I got an accelerator board with 32Mb of fast RAM which could not be used for that purpose. New === * picture can now be swapped without removing it first. * added support for uncompressed ILBM files. * added help messages. * added refresh option. System requirements =================== * OS 3.0+, 2Mb+ Fast RAM, no graphics card Procedure ========= * Use your favourite painter to create your desired backdrop picture. Save it as plain ILBM. It must have the same width and no greater height as that of your Workbench screen. It should also not use more than half as many colors as your workbench. * Set your workbench to backdrop mode, with a plain single background color, in the usual way. * Call "wallpaper" with your picture as parameter. * See what happens :-) * Call "wallpaper" without parameters to unload picture. * Add call to your s:Startup-Sequence script, right below the "LoadWB" command, if you like. An example: My machine runs OS 3.9. Workbench screen is 640 x 512, 256 colors. Background picture is 640 x 480, 64 colors, made with PPaint 6 out of an PNG original: wallpaper sys:prefs/presets/backdrops/b012.iff This saves me 300 kbytes of grapics mem... Warning ======= "wallpaper" is a system hack (at least in part). It may cause problems with other software. Have Fun!
