CALL FOR PAPERS
Those who are interested in participating with oral presentation in the
HERMIS '94 Conference are invited to submit three copies of an extended
abstract not over 3 typed pages (A4 with 1.5 spacing) including figures. The
abstract may include the basic ideas, methodologies and the results of the
work that is going to be presented. Emphasis will be given to papers that are
relevant to Computer Mathematics and its Applications, especially in the
following areas: Computational Mathematics, Operational Research and
Statistics, Mathematics in Economic Sciences. Papers in the areas of
Data-Bases, Applications of AI to systems and computation, Expert Systems in
Numerical Computing, Computer Networks are also to be considered.
The HERMIS '94 Congress will include several related topics that will
make the Conference of interest to a wide audience of Mathematicians, Computer
Scientists, Economists and many others who wish to become acquainted with the
underlying ideas, concepts and potential applications of the scientific
subjects. The papers presented at the Conference will be published, subject to
refereeing, in the Proceedings of the HERMIS '94 Conference by HMS. The
current plan is to publish post-conference Transactions. Details about the
more formal Transactions, to be published at a later date, may be obtained

In order for CFD to get to new levels of usefulness to industry, there
is a need for better turbulence models for high Re flows. An honest
appraisal by industry on needs, and a similar word by academia and
researchers at national labs on what can be done now is probably
necessary. The workshop will deal with the numerical analysis and CFD
algorithms that could bridge the gap, and will include those aspects
of turbulence theory that have relevance to modeling used in
simulation. Topics to include: Modeling, Non-equilibrium Turbulence,
Spectral and High Order Methods, Adaptive Grids, Lagrangian Methods,
Ocean Dynamics.

Subject: Special Issues of Advances in Computational Mathematics
Call for Papers:
The journal Advances in Computational Mathematics would like to announce a
special issue which is to be concerned with practical and theoretical
aspects of multiscale techniques.
Advances in Computational Mathematics is a new journal devoted to all
aspects of computational mathematics, including basic theory, applications,
algorithms and software. The journal is published by Baltzer Publishing
from Basel, Switzerland, and currently has more than forty members on its
editorial board, representing all areas of computational mathematics. John
Mason of the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, UK, and Charles
A. Micchelli of T.J. Watson IBM Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY, USA
serve as editors-in-chief.
Multigrid algorithms and multilevel methods are very prominent and perhaps
the most important recently developed concepts in a central area of
computational mathematics, namely the numerical treatment of partial
differential equations. The concept of wavelets arose from rather different
sources but turns out to be closely related. In fact, while wavelets have
found their primary applications in signal processing, image analysis and
data compression, recent investigations indicate their promising potential
for the numerical treatment of operator equations as well.
Summarizing all these techniques under the term multiscale techniques is
perhaps justified by their many common features. Their enormous overall
impact on computational mathematics as well as perpetually fruitful
feedback between applications, theory and development of tools make it an
excellent topic for a special issue of a journal with the above profile
which we hope could help synthesizing the ideas, aspects and directions of
research.
Therefore we cordially invite you to submit high quality, unpublished
manuscripts on any mathematical or algorithmic aspect of multiscale
techniques and their applications. We particularly welcome manuscripts on
wavelet and multiscale techniques for the numerical treatment of operator
equations, fast numerical linear algebra, inverse problems and statistics
or applications to geometric modelling.
All submitted papers will undergo the usual process of peer review. We hope
to publish a large number of submissions and will strive to ensure that
each paper receives careful and prompt consideration.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
The Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering at Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory was established in November 1993 to
promote the development of numerical methods on massively parallel
computers in support of industrial applications. The Center is
presently conducting research in a variety of areas, including flow
through porous media, combustion modeling, computational fluid
dynamics, transport modeling, and Tokamak fusion modeling. In
addition, researchers in the Center conduct basic research in
numerical methods, with emphasis on large linear and nonlinear systems
of equations, differential equations, and parallel computing. CCSE
scientists have access to a variety of DOE computing resources,
including conventional vector supercomputers and massively parallel
computing platforms.
The CCSE has immediate openings for qualified postdoctoral candidates
in computational mathematics and scientific computing who have an
interest in applying their expertise to the modeling of groundwater
flow and contaminant migration in three-dimensional porous media. The
researcher is expected to help design algorithms for this application
and implement them on massively parallel computers. He or she will be
part of an interdisciplinary team consisting of CCSE scientists and
industrial collaborators as part of a new technology transfer effort
with the IT Corporation. Postdocs also are expected to pursue
independent (but complimentary) research interests. This position
offers outstanding opportunities for career development.
The successful applicant will have a recent PhD in computational
mathematics or scientific computing. A strong background in
applications and parallel computing is desirable, as is some
experience in scientific visualization. The appointment is for one
year, renewable for up to three years. It includes an extremely
