With great sadness we report that Nick Higham, Royal Society Research
Professor and Richardson Professor of Applied Mathematics at the
University of Manchester, passed away on January 20, 2024, at the age
of 62 after an 18 month struggle with a form of blood cancer. An
obituary describing Nick's research and leadership contributions will
appear in SIAM News in due course.

Subject: Derivatives of B-Spline Curves with Respect to Values of the Knots
Hi All,
I've got a problem where I'd like to compute derivatives of the
B-Spline S(x) with respect to the knot vector t. I have done this,
seemingly successfully, by differentiating the underlying basis
functions B_i,k;t(x), starting with its recurrence relationship and
deriving the following recurrence relationship for the Jacobian dB/dt.
The thing is, I am a little confused (or concerned) that I can't find
this sort of thing readily in the literature or existing software. I'd
like to know that I'm not missing the boat and should be doing things
in a different or better way.
If anyone has any sprinkles of advice or pointers for information, I
sure would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks, -Jim

Subject: New Book, Rough Volatility
Rough Volatility by Christian Bayer, Peter K. Friz, Masaaki Fukasawa,
Jim Gatheral, Antoine Jacquier, and Mathieu Rosenbaum
Volatility underpins financial markets by encapsulating uncertainty
about prices, individual behaviors, and decisions and has
traditionally been modeled as a semimartingale, with consequent
scaling properties. The mathematical description of the volatility
process has been an active topic of research for decades; however,
driven by empirical estimates of the scaling behavior of volatility, a
new paradigm has emerged, whereby paths of volatility are rougher than
those of semimartingales. According to this perspective, volatility
behaves essentially as a fractional Brownian motion with a small Hurst
parameter.
The first book to offer a comprehensive exploration of the subject,
Rough Volatility contributes to the understanding and application of
rough volatility models by equipping readers with the tools and
insights needed to delve into the topic, exploring the motivation for
rough volatility modeling, providing a toolbox for computation and
practical implementation, and organizing the material to reflect the
subject's development and progression.

Subject: Power of Diversity in UQ, Italy, Feb 2024
Are you participating to SIAM UQ24 but find the size and breadth of
the conference daunting?
``Power of Diversity in Uncertainty Quantification'' (PoD UQ) is
targeted to graduate students and young researchers to ease their
approach to SIAM UQ24 and ensure they make the most out of it. PoD UQ
will be held the day before the conference starts (i.e., February 26,
2024) and will be hosted by International School for Advanced Studies
(Trieste, Italy). The goals PoD UQ are to: i) Introduce students and
early-career researchers to the state-of-the-art and current trends in
modeling, sampling, and analyzing uncertainties. ii) Offer an
excellent chance for networking with both peers and more established
researchers.
The name of the meeting highlights the central role played by
diversity in UQ, a field whose advancement requires the integration of
mathematics and statistics, theory and computations. Diversity refers
also to the community of under-represent groups that PoD UQ targets
for greater inclusivity.
The full day event, partially funded by the U.S. National Science
Foundation, will have no registration fee. In addition, thanks to the
NSF funding, we may be able to provide support towards a one night
accommodation for attendees affiliated with U.S. institutions.

We seek for a Ph.D. or Postdoc candidate to work on a project within
the DFG Priority Programme SPP 2256 "Variational Methods for
Predicting Complex Phenomena in Engineering Structures and
Materials". The project deals with the development of reduced-order
models for the prediction of plastic events in disordered 2D
materials.
The application deadline is January 31, 2024, for a start on March 1st
or upon common agreement.

Subject: PhD Position, Tensor Compression for ML Models, KU Leuven
Artificial Intelligence has revolutionized the way images are
processed. During the last years, spectral imagers (e.g.,
hyperspectral, CT) have become commercially available, which offer in
particular great added for quality control in agrofood. However,
spectral imaging devices are burdened by the complexity and high
dimensionality of generated data compared to classical imagers. In
addition, machine learning models typically require large, labelled
datasets which are generally unavailable for spectral images. There is
thus a need for efficient learning strategies. The objective of this
project is to develop tensor-based compression algorithms for
efficiently building machine learning models for high- dimensional,
spectral images in agrofood applications. In this research work, you
will first evaluate the performance of tensor decomposition and
compression when applied to spectral data and fed into a machine
learning pipeline. Subsequently, you will go well beyond the state of
the art and develop novel methods that adapt the tensor decomposition
to align better with the machine learning goal (e.g., classification,
regression, clustering).
