From Coralia Cartis, Nicholas I. M. Gould, and Philippe L. Toint, this
is the go-to book for anyone interested in solving nonconvex
optimization problems. It is the first book on evaluation complexity
to cover topics such as composite and constrained optimization,
derivative-free optimization, subproblem solution, and optimal (lower
and sharpness) bounds for nonconvex problems. It is also the first to
address the disadvantages of traditional optimality measures and
propose useful surrogates leading to algorithms that compute
approximate high-order critical points, and to compare traditional and
new methods, highlighting the advantages of the latter from a

A two-year Postdoc position is available at Cerfacs, Toulouse. The
project aims to develop concepts and a toolchain based on artificial
intelligence to automatically generate a performant preconditioner for
a Krylov subspace iterative solver for the solution of linear systems
arising from a discretized Stokes problem. We will focus in particular
on a geometric multigrid preconditioner for the (1,1)-block, here, the
Laplace operator, to ensure the scalability of the solver when passing
to large-scale problems. The solver will be broken down into
components, which are then recombined in an optimal manner for
predefined criteria, using evolutionary algorithm design
techniques. The particular difficulty to develop such a toolchain for
saddle point systems is the large number of possible combinations of
solution techniques, e.g., preconditioned Krylov subspace solvers,
Schur complement approaches, deflation and augmentation techniques, or
also monolithic multigrid solvers on the whole block system. As final
step, we envisage to obtain executable code applying the best guess
solver through automatic code generation.
Required profile: PhD with experience in one or several of the
following domains: applied mathematics, computer science, iterative
solvers, numerical linear algebra, artificial intelligence, high
performance computing.

analysis and training of neural dynamical systems.
The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty members at GSSI
and SNS, developing novel techniques and algorithms for neural
networks defined via nonlinear systems of ODEs and PDEs, combining

Cardiff School of Mathematics is offering up to five fully-funded PhD
studentships in any of its research areas. Candidates can apply via

Cardiff's School of Mathematics provides an excellent postgraduate
research environment including: our new purpose-built research
facilities at Abacws (co-designed by our PGR community), a vibrant
research culture including a wide range of research events, access to
national course centres in mathematics, statistics and OR,
comprehensive professional skills training offered by Cardiff's
Doctoral Academy. The PGR community is very active in running the
SIAM-IMA Student Chapter, a valuable forum for exchange of ideas and
public engagement. Each 3.5 year studentship includes fees, stipend at
the UKRI rate and a Research Training Support Grant to cover costs
such as research consumables, training, conferences and travel. The
studentships are available for UK home students.
ACADEMIC CRITERIA: A 1st or upper 2nd class UK Honours degree (or
equivalent) and/or a Master's degree in mathematics or a suitable
related subject is required. Applicants for whom English is not their
first language must demonstrate their proficiency by obtaining an
IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each
skills component.
