Subject: Carlos Beltrán and Mark Braverman win the Smale Prize 2014
The Prize is awarded by the Society for the Foundations of
Computational Mathematics to young researchers in recognition of major
achievements in furthering the understanding of the connections
between mathematics and computation, including the interfaces between
pure and applied mathematics, numerical analysis and computer science.
About the Prize winners:
Professor Carlos Beltrán, University of Cantabria, is one of the two
recipients of the Smale Prize 2014 for his brilliant contributions to
fundamental problems in the foundations of computational
mathematics. Beltrán’s work embodies original approaches that combine
the use of complex geometric structure and analytic power to make
important progress on problems which have been the focus of intense
research efforts by others.
Professor Mark Braverman, Princeton University, is one of the two
recipients of the Smale Prize 2014 for his pioneering work on the
foundations of computational mathematics. Braverman has made
fundamental contributions to our understanding of computability and
complexity questions involving both continuous and discrete systems.

Subject: FELICITY: Finite ELement Implementation ...
FELICITY: Finite ELement Implementation and Computational
Interface Tool for You
It is a combination MATLAB/C++ toolbox for writing finite element
codes in 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D. It uses code generation to create special
purpose matrix assembly routines for a particular problem that you
define. Bilinear and Linear forms are defined via a
domain-specific-language (DSL). Furthermore, the spatial domains can
be curves or surfaces embedded in 3-D, and one can define finite
element spaces on sub-domains of co-dimension > 0.

Subject: Postdoc Position, High-order Methods for Future Architectures
The Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) has an opening for
a postdoctoral researcher to perform research in performance modeling,
analysis and optimization of high-order algorithms, with an emphasis
on suitability to future compute architectures. Specific research
opportunities exist for cross-architecture explorations, algorithm
performance predictions on future machines and performance versus
accuracy tradeoffs. The individual will work and interact with other
members of a multi-disciplinary research team to build a multi-physics
simulation code based on higher-order finite element methods, and
designed to run efficiently on a variety of advanced architectures.

Subject: Postdoc Position, Numerical Optimization and Medical Imaging
We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position in
Numerical Optimization and Medical Imaging, funded by Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Radius Diagnostics
Ltd.(the Industrial Partner), to work with Professor Raphael Hauser
(the Principal Investigator) at the Mathematical Institute, University
of Oxford. The successful candidate will also maintain a close
dialogue with the Industrial Partner in Harwell, Oxfordshire. This is
a fixed-term position for one year and is available from 1st October
2014 (or as soon as possible thereafter).
The successful candidate will conduct research in medical imaging and
sparse nonlinear optimization, developing, analysing and implementing
improved algorithms for a 3D image reconstruction problem that arises
in the context of a novel X-ray imaging system. This is a
proof-of-concept project with a focus on prototype algorithms and the
discovery of theoretical insights. The successful candidate may also
be required to teach up to four sets of undergraduate or graduate
classes per year.
Applicants should have a PhD awarded, or a Masters degree and PhD
submitted (at the time of taking up the position) in mathematics or a
related discipline, and be able to demonstrate a strong background in
optimization, numerical linear algebra and object oriented
programming.

De Gruyter launches a new Series of books on Optimization. This

Workshop - Stochastic and Multiscale Problems, 1-2 September 2014,
Mathematical Institute, Oxford University.
The aim of this two-day workshop is to bring together mathematicians,
biologists and researchers from other disciplines whose work involves
stochastic and multiscale phenomenon, to identify common methodologies
to studying such systems, both from a numerical and analytical
perspective. Relevant topics include asymptotic methods for PDEs;
multiscale analysis of stochastic dynamical systems; mean-field limits
of collective dynamics. Numerical methods, mathematical theory and
applications (with a specific focus on biology) will all be discussed.
