This is a port of NetHack 3.2.1 to the BeBox. NetHack is a single player D&D style game remotely based on the game Rogue. Please read the GuideBook for more details. This is a TTY only port and may only be run from a command line. NetHack expects its "playground" to exist in /boot/local/lib/nethackdir. This may be overridden by the environment variable NETHACKDIR. In the BeBox version of NetHack, defaults are stored in the file "NetHack Defaults" rather than the more Unix-y .nethackrc. If you want to build the game yourself, the source may be found on ftp.uu.net:/pub/games/nethack. The source for 3.2.1 will not build correctly for BeOS. An extra patch file for Be should show up on uu.net sometime soon. In the meantime, it is include in this archive. If you have any problem, contact the nethack developers at nethack-bugs@linc.cis.upenn.edu Unpacking Directions: 1. Untar the file in /boot/local/lib. Everything will be placed in a directory, nethackdir. 2. Move the executable to your favorite bin directory. Suggestions: + Set your tty window to be 80x24. NetHack does not take advantage of the larger window. + Change the font to Courier New (or Courier New Bold) and set the font size to be larger. The font size will not change for Kate. Known problems: + No special characters for walls. None of the fonts available for use in a tty window has the graphics characters needed to improve the look. If such a font existed, then all you need to do is set the dungeon, object, and/or monter mappings in your defaults file. + NetHack is supposed to recognize that the background of the window is white and change itself accordingly. It doesn't and makes the assumption that the background is black. This is annoying, but playable. It may be that the correct code sequence is being executed -- its hard to tell in that particular file. A couple of combinations have been tried, with no success. + The arrow keys don't work. + No recover utility is included because recover is broken for all platforms in the 3.2.1 release.
